Student Perception of the Function of English as a Tool of Communication

English is needed as a means of daily communication and for preparation in the world of work. The role of English is necessary as a bridge to international communication. The study aims to understand the perception of poor State Polytechnic engineering students who receive English courses and awareness of English as a means of daily communication and in the workplace. The research was conducted using qualitative methods with interview data collection techniques. Interviews were conducted directly to three sources of engineering majors at the State Polytechnic of Malang, each from the Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, and Civil Engineering majors. The results of this study show that English is essential as a means of communication in everyday life as well as in the world of work. Although participants still felt difficult to use English as a means of communication, participants were aware that mastering English would be very useful in everyday life and could provide many benefits in the workplace.
