Anxiety of English Language Study Program Students in Speaking Practice in Offline Classes

Abstract

Anxiety often occurs when communicating in a foreign language. This also happens to students of English Study Program. Therefore, this study aims to identify speaking anxiety experienced by 2C D4 English for Business and Professional Communication students. Using a qualitative approach and using two instruments namely observation and interview in collecting data. Five students were the subjects of this study. The findings show that some of the main causes of anxiety are lack of mastering English words, lack of confidence, and worry about making mistakes in speaking. Furthermore, the strategies used to overcome anxiety in speaking English were explained. There are four strategies that can be used by students. By applying these strategies, students are expected to overcome anxiety and learn to speak well. In conclusion, speaking anxiety can have a negative impact on language learning. However, this problem can be overcome with the strategies used.
