Motivation and Interest in Learning English for Non-English Speaking Students

Abstract

English is a universal language used to communicate all over the world. The use of English is very influential in the world because the majority of world forums use English as their means of communication, therefore mastering English is very helpful in terms of expanding relationships and careers. Based on this background, this research is focused on two problem formulations. First, how is the interest of non-English major students in English courses. Second, what is the motivation of non-English major students to learn English. This research was conducted on students from non-English study programs in semester 3 of Malang State Polytechnic. This study used quantitative research methods by including a questionnaire consisting of 2 intrinsic motivation factors and 3 extrinsic motivation factors where each sub-sector consists of 3 questions. The results of the questionnaire on the interest and motivation to learn of non-English 3rd semester students of Malang State Polytechnic which has been distributed to 30 students show that they have interest and motivation to learn English. Although they have difficulties in learning materials such as Speaking, Listening, Writing, and Reading.
