Students' Interest and Motivation to Learn English

Abstract

English as an international language cannot be separated from teaching and learning activities, especially in universities as a means for a student to achieve success in the future. This article aims to find out what is the percentage of interest and what is the motivation behind the students to learn English. This research was conducted on five polytechnic students with non-English majors in 2021/2022. The data collection instrument for this study was an online questionnaire. The results of this study can be concluded that polytechnic students' interest in learning English can be classified as quite high due to students' awareness of the importance of learning English to prepare themselves before entering the world of work. There are several driving factors including, fondness for the English language, as well as content containing English. For the motivation behind their interest, namely to broaden their horizons and soft skills which will make it easier for them to work in the future.
